The Young Creative Council presents Unite V
Once again the monkeys of the YCC put on a great event but this time there was a little twist…
Before the industry folk could sink their teeth into the fresh portfolios, the young teams had 2 minutes on stage to use however they saw fit. Now, this was a pretty massive gamble letting 20 student teams do whatever they fancied on stage – but in a funny way, it sort of worked. It gave the audience a little insight into their personalities before you even got to the work. Some of the early teams got it right with stand up and even the odd magic tricks. One team auctioned off their left thighs to be tattooed with whatever the highest bidder paid - they ended the night £70 better of and a placement to boot! (Unfortunately, they will probably have to spend the rest of their lives with a penis tattooed on their legs!) Personally, some got it wrong – it left me wanting to dig a hole in the ground for a way to escape. One girl decided to give birth to a balloon and another posed as Yoda, gracing the stage, funnily enough, the only word we could understand was “creative”.
With a full hard days work of being a creative (watching YouTube, updating blog and trying to nick food from meetings) you can imagine after an hour and a bit of ‘performances’ from students we we’re all pretty tired, so unfortunately only got to take a peek at 3 books. The over standard of the talent was good, but very copy heavy (where have all the storyboards gone?) I think the core thought of trying to find an insight or a truth and to make an ad truly great is getting lost. The teams just wanted to do something cool for the sake of cool not with the little glimmer of amazing to create true advertising gold. A lot of the students seemed to be saying ‘if this were to happen…’ Your book is about getting noticed, and more often that not, you can’t afford to play it safe. You have the rest of your career to listen to clients and account people telling you where things go, what you need to say and re-writing your copy. Right now you can do anything so you’ve got to be better than boring!
Well done YCC another fab one and a much better venue this time! Thanks so much for making it all happen.
